[WARNING! POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD!]

Despite all the excitement and pulse-pounding anticipation for July's upcoming "The Dark Knight," a dark cloud looms over the project. Moviegoers are bound for a captivating performance with Heath Ledger's Joker, but the experience will be bittersweet knowing that it'll never be replicated. For months, rumors boomed that the Joker had a major role in a speculated sequel to "The Dark Knight," but all of that's been thrown into doubt with the tragic passing of Mr. Ledger. Recasting the character seems nearly sacrilegious, though it could be necessary if the Joker's role in the sequel is truly integral. So far, mum's been the word on the topic from cast and crew... until now.Cast member Gary Oldman, who plays Lt. James Gordon in the series, spoke to MovieWeb.com about the possibility of recasting the Clown Prince of Crime. "They did it with Katie Holmes' character," Oldman said regarding the idea. "I understand that this is a different circumstance, but I think another actor could do the job. I think Heath would want another actor to do the job."But still, Mr. Oldman suggests that there's an alternative plan in the works. "Maybe we don't need the Joker," he said, "Because we'll have The Riddler."Very interesting. Considering the rumors that Joker would be assisting Batman's investigation from a cushy Arkham Asylum padded room, it's not a far-out idea to utilize Edward Nigma in Joker's stead. This way we get Chris Nolan's take on a different classic rogue, and Ledger's final performance remains preserved. Sounds like a good deal to us.Put a smile on that face and click here for the MovieWeb.com story!
